The Duke's Cut

Another word for canal, the “cut” that runs alongside the pub
links the Oxford Canal with the Thames.

Constructed by George Spencer, the Duke of Marlborough, and opened in 1789, it was the first such link, with the alternative at Isis Lock being opened in1796. In 1792 the Cut was conveyed in Trust to the Vice-Chancellor and the Mayor of Oxford.

The previous incumbent of Rosie O’Grady’s had owned the premises for 10 years, and little had changed since he launched the venue as an Irish theme pub. When he decided to sell up fierce bidding ensued and the lucky new owner was our very own James Knox! While also running a security company, James had plenty of experience in the trade, having worked with Bass, opened O’Neill’s in Oxford more than a decade ago, and run the Zodiac Nightclub. Although an Irish man himself, his vision was entirely different and centred around creating a spacious, light and welcoming pub with good food, a good atmosphere and great customer service. One refurbishment later, and that’s exactly what we’re providing!
